History Of the Department

Following the World War II soon post-war reconstruction programmes progressing in full swing there were acute shortage of trained veterinarians and as such large scale recruitments from Madras and Bengal were ensue done. Even then the gap between demand and supply could not be bridged. After reorganization of states, Vidarbha became part of bilingual Bombay state and once again acute shortage of veterinarian were experienced. This coupled with aspirations for regional development, gave an impetus for establishment of Veterinary College at Nagpur. Thus in 1956-57, the Government of Bombay took the decision to establish a Veterinary College at Nagpur.

Department of Medicine is one of the three clinical department viz. Medicine, Surgery and Animal reproduction. The courses in Medicine are offered since III year onwards. The Department was established with following aims:

  1. Established metabolic profile tests for optimum milk yield.
  2. Low priced and effective remedial measures for mastitis.
  3. Evolved package of practices for optimizing rural livestock production in one region.
  4. Association of hemoglobin with milk yield in cows.
  5. Canine electrocardiography.
  6. Fine needle aspiration technology for the diagnosis of prostatic diseases in dogs
  7. Laboratory diagnosis of wild life diseases.
  8. Restriction of disease interaction between domesticated and wild life animals.
  9. Relationship between micronutrients soil, plant animals.
  10. Established Rumenology Laboratory.
  11. Developed oral rehydration therapy in large animal.
  12. Formulated targeted Polyherbal anthelmintic against Haemonchosis in small ruminants.
  13. Rescued and rehabilitated wild big cats.
  14. Started haemodialysis of renal failure patients.

Vision / Mission of the Department

Education

The department of Medicine was initially imparting mere undergraduate teaching. Thereafter, the need was felt for post-graduate teaching programme so as to prepare today’s practitioners for the demands of the society. With this the regular post graduate teaching programme, M.V.Sc. was introduced in the year 1972 at Akola and Nagpur from 1972 so far 43 candidates obtained their P.G. degree from Nagpur and 16 candidates from Akola respectively .Educational programmes developed are shared as widely with the profession. It has been accepted that organized Veterinary medicine plays a significant role in each of our professional links and with this conviction university embarked upon Doctoral Programme Ph.D., by course work at university Head Quarter i.e. at Akola , in the year 1984.Facilities for registration under traditional pattern of securing Ph.D. degree by research existed till this time and in all 3 candidates have been awarded the Doctoral degree and 3 candidates obtained their Doctoral degree by course work and one in-service candidate is undergoing the programme.

 

Hospital

The need of the Veterinary College Hospital in the central location of the city was long felt. To produce today’s Vet. Practitioners competent for catering need of the society, College Hospital was established in the year 1986 with the central assistance funding from ICAR. Thus a facility for hospital training is made available to the undergraduate and post-graduate students of Medicine and Surgery disciplines. Hospital is making all round progress and to extend modern diagnostic facilities to public in general and to train field practitioners in particular, an “Advanced Diagnostic Unit” and “Clinical Pathology Laboratory” was established during the year 1997.

Ambulatory Clinic

The delivery of Animal Health service at the door step of farmers has been revolutionized by initiating; “Ambulatory Clinic” activity since 1996, village “Rui” has been adopted for all round development of Animal Husbandry activity. Transfer of technology from the Veterinary faculty directly to the livestock farmers in the area is executed through Ambulatory Clinic and response is evidenced by adoption of technologies by farmers and improvement in livestock production.
