Physiology
Encouragement to fraternity, mutual co-operation and scientific exchanges amongst Veterinary Anatomists in India
History of the Department
he Department of Veterinary Physiology was established in the year 1958, with the inception of Nagpur Veterinary College (NVC), Nagpur. The college was under the direct administrative and financial control of the Department of Animal Husbandry and was affiliated to Nagpur University for academic purpose. After the formation of Agricultural University in 1969, this college was transferred first to Maharashtra Agricultural University, Rahuri and then to Punjabrao Krihi Vidyapeeth, Akola in 1970 as a constituent college of the Agriculture University with the administrative, financial and academic control of the University. With the formation of Maharashtra Animal and Fishery Sciences University, this college has been transferred to this new University on July 2, 2001.
The department was initially started in a small barrack in the premises of Government Veterinary Hospital near Maharaj Bagh, Nagpur. In the year 1962, the college was shifted to the old university building at Seminary Hills, Nagpur and subsequently to the new college building at present location in the year 1968. The undergraduate teaching program, Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.) in the department was initiated in 1958 followed by postgraduate teaching program, Masters in Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) in the year 1979.
The department is flourished under the headship of the following personalities and the supporting academic staff..

Achievement to the Department
The department has completed 61 years of eventful, glorious existence by imparting quality education to the students. The department has earned good reputation in the country because of proud graduates in Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry who have excelled in competitive examinations such as ICAR, MPSC, Bank service etc. The department has provided able teachers, administrator, researcher and field veterinarian to the nation serving at their best to enrich production potential of animals thereby working to the economic upliftment of masses.
In the year 2011, department has developed three major laboratories as per VCI recommendations viz. two undergraduate laboratories and one postgraduate laboratory. Further department has developed essential basic laboratory facilities to conduct UG practical as per VCI syllabus. PG research facilities have been developed in the area of Oxidative Stress Physiology, Electrocardiography, Growth & Environmental Physiology, Rumen Microbiology, and Production and Reproduction Physiology.
Department has completed two externally funded research project in the year 2010 and 2029 and conducted a seminar on “Role of Physiologists in Veterinary Profession” and National Veterinary physiology Quiz (West Zone) at NVC, Nagpur on 6th October, 2012.
Vision / Mission of the Department
Since the department comes under of Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur the mission and vision of this department is on similar lines with the mandate of MAFSU. The mission and vision of this department is not different than the mission and vision set-up by Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur for Vidarbha region in particular and Maharashtra State in general. To achieve this, the department is working accordingly with the following goals:
- To impart knowledge to the students in the field of Veterinary Physiology by adopting dynamic system of education (audio-visual aids and internet facility).
- Undertake research using molecular and biotechnological tools to enhance quality, productivity and efficiency of livestock of the region and develop appropriate technologies to solve the problems of farmers.
- To provide advanced information to the farmers, animal owners, small and large entrepreneurs, on the recently developed technologies for overall development of Veterinary, Animal and Dairy sector of the region, as a part of extension services.
- To focus on development of personality of student through class-talks/group-discussion, quiz competitions etc.
