Animal Nutrition
History Of the Department
Department of Animal Nutrition was established in the year 1958 with the establishment of Nagpur Veterinary College, Nagpur. Postgraduate programme was started in the year 1978-79 and Ph.D. programme was started in 2003-04. Since then three students have completed Ph.D. programme and 78 students have completed their M.V.Sc. programme.
This department is having advanced feed analytical laboratory which cater the need of analysis of feed samples from livestock owners, feed manufacturers, poultry farm owners and Animal Husbandry Department etc. The department also provides consultancy services for preparation of livestock and poultry feed, low cost feed formulation. Farmers training programme, on farm demonstration for enrichment of poor quality roughages, popularization of use of unconventional feed, improvement of local feed resources and judicious use of crop residues are also carried out by this department.
The well equipped Feed Technology Unit has been developed by the Department covering the concentrate feed preparation for poultry and livestock, preparation of mineral mixture, Urea molasses mineral blocks, concentrate and complete feed pellets.

Achievements of the Department
- This Department has assessed the mineral status of livestock in the region and come up with the area specific mineral mixture.
- Soya hulls, as novel feed concentrate feed ingredient has been explored for feeding of livestock in the region.
- Assessed methane production potential of common crop residues used in the State for feeding of livestock
- Developed lipid based methane mitigation strategy, which also economizes the milk production in buffalo
- Waste crop residue like cotton stalk has been explored as roughage source for livestock feeding
- Standardized ozone treatment of waste crop residues to improve its nutritive value and making them more digestible
- Developed cattle biscuit machine and its formulation
Vision / Mission of the Department
- To conduct area specific need based research.
- Complete feed formulation for livestock using locally available feeds, fodder resources.
- Strategic feed supplementation for enhancement of productivity.
- Use of locally available feed resources and unconventional feed
- Enhancement of fodder resource availability/quality through different processing methods
- To provide laboratory analytical services to the farmers, entrepreneurs
- To develop skillful resource personnel Â
