History Of the Department
Established on seminary hills adjacent to the banks of well known Futala lake of Nagpur city, department of ARGO was established by founder member of ISSAR Dr A. S. Kaikini in 1961. The department has rich technical heritage and credentials in the field of animal reproduction. Functional and technological achievements of the department have been coined by then professor and head Dr R. M. Bhandari, Dr P. M. Belorkar, Dr. S. C. Vhora and Dr. S. R. Chinchkar. The department has rich contributions by Dr. V. B. Hukeri, Dr. D. R. Pargaonkar, Dr. M. S. Kadu, Dr. J. K. Puranik and Dr. A. W. Deshmukh. Many senior professors of the department have been deputed for FRVCS course, Sweden. Presently Dr. S. K. Sahatpure is heading the department.
Department is imparting UG teaching since 1963 and post graduate facility is started from 2002. At present, PG and Ph, D. degree courses are also offered to the students of ARGO. Every year 03 PG and 02 Ph. D students are being admitted by the department. Tilldate, Department has proud credential of awarding MVSc degree to 22 students and Ph D degree to five in-service candidates. Many pass out post graduate candidates of the department have been appointed on dynamic leadership posts by international agencies.
Department of ARGO has taken up post graduate research on infertility, andrology, obstetrics, oestrus synchronization and hormonal control of oestrus. The thrust research areas on which the department is extensively working are different oestrus synchronization and artificial insemination protocols and their efficacy in enhancing the conception rate in bovine. The department has completed 06 research projects and 08 sponsored research projects.
As a Faculty improvement programme, Dr. M. S. Kadu was deputed to Germany for Post- Graduate Diploma in Physio-pathology of Animal Reproduction. Dr. S. K. Sahatpure attended the International Conference of Animal Reproduction at Budapest, Hungery in 2008. Dr. S. R. Chinchkar attended World Congress of the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) in 2003 at Bangkok, Thailand and in 2012 at Birmingham, U.K. Three professors of the department have been bestowed with ISSAR fellowship. The Department has published International research papers besides 120 research papers published in the journals of National repute. The staff members of the department are recipient of 05 Young Scientist Awards from ISSAR. Dozen post graduate students of the department have been awarded for the best research presentation awards during past conferences held all over the country by ISSAR. Department has recommended and registered minimum 40 life members of ISSAR and the department is endowed with responsibility of Maharashtra chapter of ISSAR since last 10 years.
Activities of the department are being taken up at college premises in departmental laboratories, on college instructional farm and associated with polyclinic. Clinical services are being rendered through village clinic, clinical camps, emergency services and adopted village activities. Department has well established mini conference hall, AV system, museum of rare specimens and all full fledged laboratories.
The Department is regularly organizing different hands on trainings on reproductive health management and handling of modern diagnostic equipments in veterinary profession for field veterinarians – Livestock Development Officers and Livestock Supervisors every year. Till date total 04 regional symposia, 28 trainings were conducted through which total 830 professionals have been trained and revenue was generated. In collaboration with M/S Virbac, the Department had organized one day workshop on “Recent Trends in Animal Reproduction” which was delivered by Dr. Gustav, Virbac Pvt. Ltd., France.
The Department is implementing Rashtriya Gokul Mission, Government of India , New Delhi funded research project on “Strengthening of ETT/IVF laboratory” under MAFSU, Nagpur with a total project cost of Rs.2.97 Crs. As a part of project the Department has successfully reproduce Gir cow calf through Embryo Transfer Technology. The trails on In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer are in progresss.
The department is involved in extension activities like All India radio programmes, TV programmes, extension publications, exhibitions and on call services. Folders, leaflets and technical booklets have been published by the department in the past every year.

Teaching :
- Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Ph.D. courses in the discipline of Animal Reproduction, Gynaecology and Obstetrics and Animal Biotechnology are being taught as per the syllabus of Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and ICAR, New Delhi.
Departmental Research Activity
Research :
- The Department is working on efficacy and efficiency of different oestrus synchronization protocols at field level in cows and buffaloes.
- Various agency projects aiming to reduce inter calving period and increasing reproductive efficiency of Gaolao, cross bred cows and Nagpuri buffaloes are being implemented at the Institute’s Gaolao Cow and Nagpuri Buffalo Breeding Farm located at Telankhedi, Nagpur.
- For pet animals like Dog and Cats, the practice of oestrus induction, detection and artificial insemination is being practiced.
Departmental Extension Activity
Extension :
- Department has participated in many animal health camps organized by various agencies in Villages, NSS Camps, Adopted Village Scheme and treated cases of infertility and gynaecological disorders in domestic animals.
- Guided progressive dairy farmers of the region by visiting and on site demonstration of reproductive biotechniques like oestrus synchronization in cows and buffaloes.
- Conducted five days refresher course on “Artificial Insemination In cattle and Buffaloes” for Field Veterinarians of Department of Animal Husbandry, Maharashtra State during the Year 2004-2005, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Total 600 Livestock Development Officers and Livestock Supervisors were trained.
- Conducted One A.I. training programme of three months for educated unemployed youth under self employment scheme .
Equiments:
The Department is equipped with most of the advanced diagnostic equipments being used in Animal Reproduction Research.
